citizenM Southwark Bankside Overview

First Impressions

Walking into citizenM Southwark Bankside feels like stepping into a design magazine — but one where you’d actually want to hang out. This four-star hotel sits right in the thick of things on Lavington Street, and honestly, the lobby alone makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto something pretty special. The whole place has this effortlessly cool vibe that doesn’t try too hard, which I really appreciate after staying in so many hotels that feel like they’re screaming for attention.

Location & Neighborhood

You know what’s brilliant about this spot? You’re literally in Southwark, which means you can walk to Borough Market for breakfast (trust me on this one), cross the Thames to St. Paul’s without breaking a sweat, and still feel like you’re in a proper London neighborhood rather than tourist central. The Tate Modern is practically next door, and if you’re into that whole South Bank scene — which you should be — you’re perfectly positioned. I mean, couples seem to get it since they rate the location 9.2 out of 10, and they’re usually pretty picky about these things.

The Room Experience

The room design is where citizenM really shows off, but in a good way. Everything’s compact yet somehow spacious, with this massive bed that’s honestly some of the most comfortable hotel sleeping I’ve experienced in London. The tech setup is pretty slick too — you control everything from lighting to temperature through a tablet, which sounds gimmicky but actually works brilliantly once you get the hang of it. The floor-to-ceiling windows make even the smaller rooms feel airy, and the rainfall shower is one of those little luxuries that makes you not want to leave.

Breakfast & Dining

Breakfast here is actually worth getting up for, which says something coming from someone who usually grabs coffee and runs. They’ve got the full English sorted, obviously, but what impressed me was how well they handle the vegetarian and vegan options — it’s not just an afterthought. The buffet setup flows well, and if you’ve got dietary restrictions, they’re genuinely helpful rather than just pointing you toward sad-looking fruit. The restaurant area gets busy around 8 AM, so either go early or embrace the buzz.

Why Guests Love It

There’s something about this place that keeps people coming back — apparently more repeat guests than most hotels, which tells you everything really. I think it’s because citizenM manages to feel both design-forward and genuinely comfortable, without that sterile boutique hotel feeling you get sometimes. The staff actually seem to enjoy working there, the beds are legitimately excellent (not just hotel marketing speak), and you’re positioned perfectly to explore both traditional London sights and the more interesting stuff happening south of the river. It’s the kind of place where you end up staying longer than planned, not because you have to, but because you genuinely want to.

Central London’s apartments welcome families with museum trails, theatre matinees, and stroller-friendly parks.
